If you think of your social networks as extensions of your own brand (which they are), they should be closely tied together. Anytime you have a new blog post on your website, share it on your social networks to get people heading to your website. I know many bloggers that have had great success using Pinterest to drive traffic to their blogs. I’ve had a good measure of success on my Pinterest too. You’ll want to make sure you have good visuals to go with each blog post–infographics like I have here and here are great for this–and the most successful Pinterest bloggers recommend that you post at least 10 unique pins (images) for every new blog post you publish on your site if you hope to drive traffic to your website in a meaningful way.
Very in-depth information, Brian. I love the part about updating old content, I still find old articles in search results, sometimes 3+ years ago that are clearly out of date when it comes to marketing topics. I usually skip those results, and wonder how that content is still ranking, but it would be great if everyone updated that content. This entire post is full of useful tips, as usual. I really enjoyed your post, im building my own business from the ground up making custom furniture, lighting, and home decor. it took me a year to launch my website and now im trying to invite more traffic and ways for clients and interested parties to share my content and start buying my product. Make it easy to dive deep into your site: As an expert in your industry, you should share your knowledge and insight with others. Not only is this valuable for your readers, but it provides a great opportunity for you to advertise your business within a blog. Make sure the process for a reader to access your website from your blog is effortless. Add links to other pages (your store page, for example) within your article to keep the reader on your website.
The first step of nailing your blog email marketing is creating a sign-up widget in your posts and on your site for a newsletter—which is one of the most powerful ways to keep your readers excited about the work you’re doing. Consider using a tool to manage your lists by evaluating ConvertKit vs AWeber vs Mailchimp to see which fits your needs best.

In some cases you can also consider surveying your current audience or customers through email, on-site surveys or SurveyMonkey.  Be sure to ask for some profiling information that you can use for determining specific persona needs like age, sex, location, etc. (Probably best not to make it sound like a creepy text chat like I just did though...)  :)
In fact, you should be spending a lot of time figuring out what the best way is to promote your content—I try to live by the 80/20 rule. I spend 80% of my time distributing my content, or figuring out the best way to promote it, and only 20% on the actual writing. Obviously, the quality of the writing is important, but it doesn’t matter how good it is if you aren’t spending the time to get it out there.
Mentioning brands, articles, and related influencers within a piece is always a great opportunity to distribute content. When I publish a post, I aim to have between 10 and 20 outbound links in the piece, from pull quotes to mentions. When I post the article, boom, I have 10 to 20 people to email to let them know I featured them. I’ll ask them to share the piece with their followers on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
Thanks for a this timely article. If I understand it correctly, are you saying that we would better be off looking at market data in our niche and make an article of that for influencers to share rather than actionable tips that the target clients would be interested in? Shouldn’t there be a double strategy – articles for the influencers to share and articles for the users to enjoy?
